Erin Konrad's love for everything entertainment dates back to elementary school when she became obsessed with classic Hollywood musicals. When she's not catching up on all her favorite television shows, she's advising her friends and family on what they should binge watch next.

Adapting books for television can be a tricky thing. It's not always easy to bring the narrative from the page to the screen, and sometimes the storytelling just doesn't end up working. Luckily, Prime Video launched a series last summer that not only captures the spirit of the book it was based on, but has captivated audiences so much that it's already earned a Season 2 renewal.

With just a quick eight episodes, it's also destined to be your next weekend binge. What Is Prime Video's 'We Were Liars' About? E. Lockhart published her novel, We Were Liars, back in 2014. The television series based on the book came out in June 2025, and is even more of a wild ride than the book itself. The thrilling drama follows the story of the"Liars," four teenagers who have grown up together since childhood. Much of the story is told from the perspective of Cadence"Cady" Sinclair Eastman , a young woman who has a tight bond with her two cousins, Mirren Sinclair Sheffield and Johnny Sinclair Dennis , and their family friend, Gat Patil . Related 'We Were Liars' Review: This Psychological Thriller Series Is Prime Video's Best Teen Drama Since 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' The series from the creators of 'The Vampire Diaries' expands on E. Lockhart's bestselling novel. Posts By Isabella Soares The four teens vacation every summer on a private island called Beechwood on the East Coast that the Sinclair family owns. The blonde and pretty Sinclair cousins are sort of oblivious to their wealth and privilege, but in Summer 16 , Gat helps them see outside the privileged fishbowl they're living in. Gat and Cady fall in love, but a tragic event occurs at the end of the summer that Cady has no actual memory of. We Were Liars takes place in two timelines: the blissful Summer 16 and the following year, when Cady has severe amnesia and migraines and tries to piece together what actually happened to her the year before. 'We Were Liars' Will Have You Glued to Your Screen From Start to Finish We Were Liars is not a simple YA romance story about Cady and Gat. Instead, each episode is a propulsive, thrilling ride, with dramatic moments and equally fascinating explorations of wealth and privilege. It's also a sly look at how generational trauma and dark secrets get passed down from one generation to the next. Because of the structure of the storytelling, you'll be zooming to the next episode to find out what happens next and to get answers to the biggest questions: what actually happened to Cady that summer? And how will she survive without a clear memory of what transpired? She's surrounded by people with ulterior motives and tons of baggage, which makes it seem like her recovery might be impossible. By switching back and forth in time, you'll get sucked into We Were Liars and will feel even more embedded in the lives of the complex and enigmatic Sinclair family. The series is also elevated from a traditional YA drama because of its impressive cast. Each member of the Liars is portrayed with vulnerability and honesty, but it's often the performances of the adults in the cast that will captivate you the most. Mamie Gummer, Caitlin FitzGerald, and Candice King are all impeccable as the mothers of the Liars, who scramble for standing in the eyes of their uber-rich parents. David Morse is also outstanding as the gruff and intimidating patriarch of the Sinclair family, who manages to manipulate and pull the strings of everyone around him. Every member of the brood reminds the viewer that wealth comes with its own shackles, and the way the Sinclairs often volley for attention and stab each other in the backs to get ahead is both heartbreaking and mystifying. When We Were Liars came out last summer, you might have heard the buzz about a major twist at the end of the eight episodes. If you've managed to avoid hearing what it entails, you should binge the series to catch one of the wildest twists to come out of television in recent years. Plus, now is the perfect time to catch up on the show, since a second season has already been greenlit. But here's a warning: if you sit down to watch the first episode of the addicting We Were Liars, you won't be able to stop watching until you've reached the shocking finale.
