Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Tiff (Camryn Jones), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), and KJ (Fina Strazza)look out a window with anxious expressions in Paper Girls
In the age of streamers, there always seems to be something new to watch, but with so many options readily available, even some of the best shows slip through the cracks. This is the case with 2022's Paper Girls.
The Prime Video sci-fi series is severely underrated, especially when you consider its intriguing story. Incorporating the weirdness of time travel and the emotional chaos of growing up, the series is an unconventional coming-of-age story as four 12-year-old girls accidentally get swept up in a war between time travelers and discover their own futures. While it may have gone largely unnoticed, it's never too late to catch up. Based on a comic book series by the same name, the sci-fi adventure begins a story with a lot of potential, but it was prematurely canceled after a single season, and never got to reach a true ending. Yet, even with its limited time, Paper Girls weaves a compelling story, exploring universal truths of growing up and friendship. With shocking twists and endearing characters, the series is an entertaining watch, and since it has just eight episodes, no more than an hour long, Paper Girls is an easy binge-watch that any sci-fi fan would enjoy. 'Paper Girls' Turns Time Travel into a Story of Growth With such an eventful plot, Paper Girls has no time to waste, starting by introducing the four main characters, Erin , Tiff , Mac , and KJ . Though they are virtual strangers, the girls team up to accomplish their paper route on the chaotic morning after Halloween in 1988. However, an unexpected disruption sends them to 2019, making them targets of the Old Watch, an organization that hunts time travelers who could impact the timeline. With a mysterious device as their only clue, the four girls are trapped 30 years in the future, facing culture shock and more than a few surprises about their own lives as they search for a way home. The time travel element sets up a unique adventure, but it is only part of what makes Paper Girls so interesting. As the unlikely group faces the challenge of being lost in time, they learn their futures and meet older versions of themselves, making the story one of self-discovery as much as anything else. This allows them to experience the real elements of growing up alongside the more fantastical aspects of the journey, so the series is equal parts a coming-of-age story and a time-travel adventure. The girls struggle with their ambitions, sexuality, and mortality as they realize that their futures aren't what they expect. Each one faces an emotional journey, particularly Erin, whose older self quickly becomes involved in the adventure, yet these complications allow the characters to grow, adding both humor and heart to the thrilling story. Castro 'Paper Girls' Thrives on the Dynamic Between the Girls Between the 80s and 90s nostalgia and the layered time war storyline, the series has a lot to recommend it, but the highlight of Paper Girls is the girls themselves. The series shows them slowly developing friendships, going from near strangers to allies to friends willing to risk their lives for each other. This dynamic is made more interesting by the fact that each girl has a dramatically different life. KJ is from a wealthy family whose expectations she cannot meet, while Mac is part of a struggling family where she doesn't feel valued. Meanwhile, Erin focuses on caring for her mother, who cannot speak the language, and Tiff works toward her lofty ambitions. On the surface, they have little in common, but as each must face a difficult realization about their future, they have no support system but each other, which rapidly brings them together. Paper Girls creates this unlikely friend group in just a handful of episodes, allowing it to grow naturally as they share shocking experiences, and that dynamic was just beginning. With so much more to explore in these friendships, it's a shame the series was cancelled after only one season. While it leaves many unanswered questions, Paper Girls offers an exciting story that sci-fi fans don't want to miss.
