One Alabama lawmaker is hoping to address crime across the state by helping young criminals get on the right path.

) - The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Reed Ingram , said 60% of crime in our state comes out of five municipalities: Birmingham , Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa. So this bill would focus first on these specific areas.

He says the bill would require them to be detained in a juvenile detention facility for two hours and then complete an intervention class with their parent or guardian. “The crime is up and I think it starts with our juveniles,” said Rep. Ingram. “I think if they know they can get away with something on the non-violent crime , then they’re gonna carry a gun and maybe the next one won’t be a nonviolent crime and I think we save the child that’s committing these crimes. I think it’s important we save their life to where they can be a good citizen.”
