An investigation has been launched after possible human remains, including a skull, were discovered Tuesday afternoon in Will County .The Will County Sheriff's Office was called to Oakwood Drive and Townline Road in Mokena for a report of human remains found in a nearby field.
Officials said land surveyors working in the field found what appeared to be a human skull. Deputies completed a search of the property and found additional bones scattered throughout the field.A comprehensive search of the field started around 9 a.m. on Wednesday.The bones that are recovered will be given to the Will County Coroner's Office for processing and cross-referencing missing person cases.Fox Chicago spoke with some neighbors who didn't want to go on camera, but said this same area is under consideration by a developer to build new homes on this vacant stretch of farmland. Early Wednesday night, Will County Coroner Laurie H. Summers reported her office took possession of a suspected human skull and other skeletal remains by land surveyors. On Facebook, the Will County Coroner's Office said it will be conducting forensic testing with the help of the University of Illinois Department of Anthropology and Forensic Odontology, to determine the identity and gender of the remains. The Will County Sheriff's Office said the coroner will also cross-reference those remains with missing person cases.Anyone with tips is asked to call 727-8575 or submit tips anonymously through Crimestoppers of Will County.
