com Top 20, made its annual trek to Cranford for the Cougar Duals and left Union County 3-0, including a statement-making 36-23 win over No. 13 ranked and defending Group 4 champs Ridge, plus a 38-27 win over Cranford and a 44-21 win over Old Bridge. The victory over Ridge is Phillipsburg’s second ranked win over a North 1, Group 4 title contender through the early part of the season after they beat then-No. 19 Mount Olive, 32-30 back on Dec. 21. “We did well. I don’t think we’re at a hundred percent right now, but we’re working toward it,” Liners' second-year coach Tim Longacre said following the Ridge win. The Liners won the toss and chose even bouts against Ridge, which worked to their advantage, as did three of Ridge’s top wrestlers missing weights. But what really proved the difference for P’burg were bonus points, where the Liners had six bonus point wins (two pins, two tech falls, two major decisions), to Ridge’s three (two majors and a forfeit.) Ridge started out with a 2-0 decision at 175 when Reese Carvelli beat D’Angelo Hernandez, but the Red Devils never led again in the dual after that. They had their chances for upsets, like at 144 when Ridge state qualifier Gavin Duran was up 4-1 on 2023 P’burg state medalist Luke Geleta before Geleta got an escape and the go-ahead takedown with 1:22 left in the bout to win 5-4 and put P’burg a bout away from clinching. “That was big.
