New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso has agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract extension with the team, keeping him in Queens. The deal includes a $10 million signing bonus and salaries of $20 million in 2024 and $24 million in 2025. Alonso has the option to opt out after the 2025 season.
First baseman Pete Alonso is continuing his tenure with the New York Mets , agreeing to a two-year, $54 million contract. A source familiar with the deal, speaking on condition of anonymity Wednesday night, confirmed the information initially reported by The New York Post. The agreement, pending a successful physical, grants Alonso a $10 million signing bonus, with salaries of $20 million in 2024 and $24 million in 2025.
Notably, Alonso possesses the option to opt out after the 2025 season, potentially returning to free agency. Earlier in the negotiations, the Mets extended a $71 million, three-year proposal, offering $27 million in 2025, followed by $22 million in each of the subsequent two seasons. This offer included an opt-out clause after the first two years. Despite Alonso's career milestone reaching 30 years old on December 7th, he remained on the free-agent market longer compared to other premier first basemen. Christian Walker secured a three-year, $60 million contract with the Houston Astros, while Paul Goldschmidt (New York Yankees) and Carlos Santana (Cleveland) opted for one-year agreements.Mets owner Steve Cohen previously expressed frustration regarding the negotiation process, characterizing it as more challenging than the discussions leading to Juan Soto's record-breaking $765 million, 15-year contract. Cohen, who echoed the sentiment that Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, represented Soto as well, stated, 'I don't like the structures that are being presented to us...it's highly asymmetric against us and I feel strongly about it. I will never say no...But the reality is that we're moving forward and we continue to bring in players...As we continue to bring in players, the reality is, it becomes harder to fit Pete into what is a very expensive group of players that we already have.' Alonso, affectionately known as the 'Polar Bear', has cemented his place as a fan favorite at Citi Field. During his six seasons with the Mets, he amassed 226 home runs and earned four All-Star selections. Despite a career-high 172 strikeouts in 2023 and an OPS dipping to a career-low .788, his impact on the team remains undeniable. He shone during his rookie year in 2019, clinching the NL Rookie of the Year award with a .260 batting average, a league-leading 53 home runs, and 120 RBIs. He achieved another career-high with 131 RBIs in 2022, and despite a career-low .217 batting average in 2023, he still managed 46 home runs and 118 RBIs, showcasing his consistent power hitting. In a crucial game against the Milwaukee Brewers during the NL Wild Card Series, Alonso delivered a three-run home run in the ninth inning, propelling the Mets to victory and ultimately advancing them in the playoffs. Following their loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Championship Series, the Mets bolstered their roster with players like Juan Soto, Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, Griffin Canning, A.J. Minter, Sean Manaea, Ryne Stanek, and Jesse Winker
