Pete Alonso remains a free agent and the Mets still need a first baseman
He said so in a Zoom call with reporters on Monday, during which he also discussed why he decided to return to the Mets, what he’s been working on during the offseason, and the team’s current state.
Alonso remains the top power hitter available, but as a first baseman with little value outside of his bat, his market has not developed as he hoped. Most recently, the four-time All-Star’s camp extended an exclusive offer to the Mets, believed to be for three years with a high average annual value.that Alonso would sign a deal worth “three years, $93.3 million, with deferrals that will lower the deal’s present-day value.
Last week, Mets legend David Wright also expressed his desire to see Alonso back in New York in a talk with reporters. Wright also offered him a word of advice. Manaea had a resurgent season for the Mets last season. In 32 starts, he went 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA and 184 strikeouts over 181 2/3 innings. His season took a real turn when he adopted a more horizontal arm slot thanks to Braves ace Chris Sale.
