The fire was reported on the fifth floor of a building near the campus of New Jersey City University.
Updated: Jan. 28, 2026, 10:10 a.m.A person died in a fire Tuesday night in Jersey City, officials said. The fire happened in an apartment in the College Towers area of the city shortly before 9 p.m., according to Kim Wallace Scalcione, a spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Public Safety.
Firefighters arrived and found a fire on the fifth floor of the building and found one person unconscious inside, Scalcione said. They were taken from the structure, CPR was administered and they were taken to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead. “My heart and condolences go out to the family of the victim of tonight’s fire,” Jersey City Mayor James Solomon said in a statement. “No words can ease the pain of this loss, but I know that all of Jersey City grieves with them.”The Red Cross also responded to provide a warming truck and assist five adults and two children who were displaced, Scalcione said.I have been a reporter from NJ.com since March 2018 and have worked the night shift since that time.
