Plans for a six-storey building next to St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney have provoked opposition from churchgoers, heritage experts and a priest.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney has been forced to amend plans for a six-storey office block next to St Mary’s Cathedral after an outcry from parishioners, heritage experts and a priest who labelled the project “hideous”.

But the $39 million building proposal has met strong opposition, with the Heritage Council of NSW calling the proposed development “unacceptable as it fails to respect the significant heritage values of the precinct”. The Archdiocese spokesman said it was working with the council to ensure the project “responds to concerns from parishioners and neighbours and will serve the needs of Australian Catholics and the wider community now and into the future”.A Catholic priest described the proposal as a “hideous multi-storey building” that will degrade a heritage worship site and lead to the “fundamental destruction” of open space in a submission to the City of Sydney.

Fellow parishioner Paula Flynn said the proposed building would replace a “restful view” with the side of an office block.Flynn also said the proposed building will destroy what she called the architectural harmony between the Cathedral and the Chapter Hall.
