Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was stabbed multiple times at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley on Monday night.Webb also pointed to comments “around religion” made by the accused before the stabbing. “This is unacceptable,” Webb said. “Police attended the incident in Wakeley last night to assist that community in response to calls for assistance. And the crowd turned on police.”Police Commissioner Karen Webb and Premier Chris Minns at the press conference in Surry Hills.Premier Chris Minns called for calm and respect for the law during a “major, major terrorism investigation”.
“Six of our paramedics could not leave that facility for fear of their own safety from the community that they serve,” Morgan said.Speaking on ABC Radio Melbourne, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “It was quite unacceptable when police are attending an event like that in order to protect the community, and the fact that the community, some people there turned on the police is completely unacceptable.
Federal MP for Fowler Dai Le, whose south-west Sydney electorate includes the Christ The Good Shepherd Church, said her community was stunned by the stabbing, especially as it occurred only two days after the Westfield Bondi Junction mass stabbings.She described Emmanuel as a “wonderful bishop leading the Assyrian community”.
