Eight years after becoming a huge cult hit in the West End, the musical The Grinning Man is heading Down Under.

Indie theatre-maker Salty Theatre is taking on the play and launching it in St Kilda’s Alex Theatre. It’s quite a distance from Melbourne’s inner-city theatre district,follows Grinpayne, an orphan and travelling circus performer with a permanent smile carved into his face. Telling his story every night by puppet show, Grinpayne heads forth into the world to discover his origins and his destiny.

Morris has form creating experimental and unconventional works. He’s best known as the director of the stage adaptation of, puppetry plays a part. Grinpayne’s backstory is told through puppetry via a show within a show, which becomes a show within a show within a show.“There’s something that happens to an audience’s imagination when the audience is required to imagine that something that is manifestly not alive, is alive,” says Morris.

“It limits your expressive ability, and I’m still figuring out how to navigate it,” says Simon. “But scenes are so epic and ginormous.”He sees it as more of an indie film than the blockbuster musicals in the city. “There’s still that big commercial stuff, but that’s all a bit repetitive,” he says. “It’s great we have new stuff coming through at this level. It’s risky, it’s quirky, it’s not mainstream.”Teitler says: “In a way, it’s perfect musical theatre.
