ELYRIA, Ohio -- Elyria City Schools briefly placed its Eastern Heights campus on lockout status Tuesday morning as a precaution after a situation involving a parent, district officials said. According to a statement from the district, school administrators requested police presence out of an abundance of caution.
No individual was on campus grounds at the time. The lockout, which lasted about 10 minutes, restricted access to the building while school activities continued as normal inside. The status was lifted without incident, and classes proceeded at both Eastern Heights Elementary School and Eastern Heights Middle School. A lockout differs from a full lockdown in that instruction continues and students remain in their classrooms, but entrances and exits are secured, and staff maintain heightened awareness outside the building. Eastern Heights serves students in both elementary and middle school grades and is one of several campuses operated by Elyria City Schools. District officials did not release additional details about the situation involving the parent.
