San Diego, CA - June 11: San Diego Padres'' Jurickson Profar left the game while batting in the eighth inning against the Oakland Athletics at Petco Park on Tuesday, June 11, 2024. Higashioka ended last night’s game with one swing of the bat, leading off the ninth inning by hitting his fourth home run in his past five games.
Perhaps Profar, who it turns out has been dealing with a balky knee for about a month, will be able to play through the injury and navigate an entire season performing at or near the level he has been playing.Higashioka was happy to be the hero for the Padres, but meeting one of his heroes seemed to be the highlight of his night.
Machado, a longtime Cardiff resident, was also at Monday’s game. His brother, La Costa Canyon High School baseball coach Justin Machado, was honored by the Padres as one of their local coaches of the year in a pregame ceremony.Of his four homers since June 1, three have sailed just fair inside the left field pole.
“He’s a great teammate,” Vásquez, who arrived in the same trade as Higashioka, said last night through interpreter Pedro Gutiérrez. “He’s a great person. And on a personal note, I say he’s been able to help me out with a game plan, just trying to execute whatever we have planned for that particular day. And he’s been a great teammate for me the last few years.”Tatis is on the verge of reaching Tony Gwynn territory.
With two right-handed hitters due up to start the eighth, Shildt went to right-hander Enyel De Los Santos. After De Los Santos got a strikeout for the second out, closer Robert Suarez came in and finished the inning on four pitches and also got through the ninth on four pitches. The most interesting part of the night was Morejón being used for one inning after taking down two-thirds of an inning on Monday. Mostly a multi-inning reliever until recently, he has been working into higher-leverage situations, as he allowed one run over his previous eight outings .
