If you can believe it, only Luis Arraez going 0-for-5 kept last night from being yet another game in which the Padres had every one of the players in their starting lineup reach base at least once.
Since returning home five games ago, they have resumed hitting home runs and doubles . That is as many home runs as they had in their previous 18 games and as many doubles as they had in their previous nine games. As Shildt said in the game story, they need to achieve consistency. More even performances all around are needed for them to separate from the other playoff contenders.
They have already had 16 games in which all nine starting batters reached base at least once. They had seven at this point last season and had it happen 25 times in all in 2023, including five times during their torrid September. They never had an 11-game stretch with a batting average this high but did have two stretches in September with a higher OPS. They batted .299 with an .863 OPS over 11 games in June 2022 and had a couple stretches better than this in 2021 and 2020.

Said Merrill: “I’m learning to get on time with the heater and adjust to the offspeed. I had a certain feel last year in Double-A, and I just kind of found it again.”The Padres are on pace to hit 102 home runs at Petco Park this season, which would eclipse by one the team record at the ballpark set in 2019.
Arraez has had 150 games in his career in which he had five or more at-bats. He has gone hitless in 18 of those games, including the past two days.
