This clearly isn’t breaking news: The Padres will again set a franchise record with their opening day payroll sitting at approximately $249 million after the final pieces were added to the roster Thursday morning.

No, those numbers leapt to yet another level after signing shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year, $280 million deal in December. Including signing bonuses, Bogaerts’ $30 million pay for 2023 is tops on the team, followed by the earnings under new contracts for Yu Darvish and Manny Machado and the one-year, $23 million deal Juan Soto signed to avoid arbitration.

In addition to the top-paid Padres, nine others will make more than $6 million this year, while 14 players will make less than $1.3 million. The latter group includes Dahl and Tapia .
