Before the largest home-opening crowd in Dodger Stadium history, Padres first baseman Phil Nevin blasted a grand slam off Hideo Nomo to lead an 8-2 victory in Los Angeles. Nevin’s homer with two outs in the fifth inning deflated the sellout crowd of 53,850 also lifted San Diego to its first season-opening win since 1998.The Padres couldn’t have started the season any worse. As a matter of fact, no other team ever did.
In a season-opener delayed by the global pandemic, first baseman Eric Hosmer drove in six runs to lift the Padres to a 7-2 victory over Arizona in an empty Petco Park. Hosmer, who had been hitless in 15 career at-bats against Diamondbacks starter Madison Bumgarner before a second-inning single, hit two three-run doubles with two outs in the sixth and seventh innings.
