Public schools in North Texas are grappling with budget constraints and declining enrollment, leading to potential school closures and calls for increased state funding.
More public schools in North Texas face potential closure as school districts grapple with tightening budgets and declining enrollment. The Carrollton Farmers Branch Independent School District is considering shutting down four schools: Furneaux Elementary, Central Elementary, McCoy Elementary, and Long Middle School. These schools were listed during a school board meeting on Thursday night, with a vote on the proposal scheduled for March 6th.
The district estimates that closing these schools would save $9 million annually. Additionally, the board recommends exploring new attendance zones for nearly all district schools to accommodate demographic shifts and population changes.Northwest ISD is pursuing a different strategy to manage a $16 million budget shortfall. They plan to eliminate 101 positions and increase student-to-teacher ratios in classrooms. The district attributes its financial struggles to the ongoing statewide school funding crisis, noting that Texas hasn't increased public school funding since 2019. Northwest ISD aims to achieve these personnel reductions through resignations and retirements rather than layoffs. This district serves communities in Denton, Tarrant, and Wise counties. In Allen, the school district is urging families and community members to advocate for increased school funding by contacting their elected officials. The district already implemented $8 million in spending cuts for the current school year and anticipates an additional $6 to $8 million in cuts for the 2025-2026 school year. These cuts could result in staff reductions at individual campuses. The Allen ISD cites challenges including inflation, declining enrollment, and inadequate funding
