Public schools, churches and hospitals face the possibility of immigration officials knocking on their doors as a directive President Donald Trump issued...
A sign that prohibits the entrance of ICE or Homeland Security is posted on a door at St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church in New York on Tuesday. Many advovates, incuding those in North Texas, worried what a new directive could mean for schools, churches and other spaces considered safe for immigrants.
Right now, schools face a lot of “what ifs,” said Michael Hinojosa, who was the Dallas ISD superintendent under the first Trump administration when many worried about mass deportations. He hopes school officials help parents remain calm — until and unless something changes. District officials advise that, should a parent be detained during school hours, DISD staff will keep students safe until an “authorized adult” can pick them up.
Hinojosa advises school leaders to instruct principals on what to do if agents come to campus and how to cooperate with law enforcement. “I don’t have any risk with any of these policies, but I will be affected by them because the people that I’m serving are gonna be suffering,” he said. “The threat of families being dispersed and taken apart, it weighs on everybody.”
