Coaches GJ Kinne and Eric Morris have a history together, with Kinne receiving advice from Morris before taking the head coaching position at Incarnate Word.
SAN MARCOS – Texas State and North Texas facing each other in the First Responder Bowl in Dallas this Friday is a matchup that felt inevitable to Bobcats’ coach GJ Kinne. 'It was one of those deals, when both teams were bowl eligible, it was like, 'Alright, yeah, this is going to happen. Where are we going to play? Do we have to go to New Mexico or are we going to play in Dallas?'' Kinne said. 'I was very thankful to stay in Dallas and stay in Texas; just made more sense.
' While the two programs haven’t played each other in more than 30 years, the two coaching staffs for Texas State (7-5, 5-3 Sun Belt) and North Texas (6-6, 3-5 AAC) have known each other intimately over the years. Mean Green head coach Eric Morris was the head coach at Incarnate Word from 2018 to 2021 before Kinne succeeded him in that role for the 2022 season after Morris left to be the offensive coordinator at Washington State. However, their relationship predates either one’s time with the Cardinals, with Kinne even confiding in Morris for advice before taking his old position at Incarnate Word. 'He recruited my brother, McLane (Carter), who ended up signing (with Texas Tech) and he ended up starting a couple games for them at quarterback,' Kinne said. 'Eric really did a lot of the quarterback recruiting and signed McLane as his lead recruiter. I got to know him a little bit throughout that process and I was heavily involved in it. 'Obviously, kept in touch with him throughout the years and when left to be the offensive coordinator at Washington State, it was one of those deals where we talked going into the interview process. That was a job I really wanted and he was kind of giving me the ins and outs of UIW and what that kind of looked like. Even after I got the job, there would be calls and questions that came up that he was very helpful with. Very appreciative of him and of that
