A new business community coalition is working with school districts to lobby for full funding, instead of against vouchers.
DALLAS — Schools are a crucial part of a region’s economic engine.That’s the new message from"Fund Schools First,"“We want to fund our public schools before we talk about any of the other things that might come up when we talk about education here in the state,” said Chris Lee, director of state advocacy for the North Texas Commission.
“We're not going to take positions on education savings accounts, vouchers, or whatever we may want to call it,” said Ken Malcolmson, president and CEO of the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce, a coalition member. “We just simply think that it's important at this time to really sit down with our legislators and emphasize the importance of funding schools.”. It is currently $6,160 and would be $1,200 to $1,500 higher if it kept up with inflation.
“Most of our workforce in the state comes from our public schools, and without a well-trained workforce, we don't have an economy,” said Lee.After senators were sworn in during the legislature's first day in Austin, Gov. Greg Abbott addressed the chamber and did not hide what he hopes is at the top of their agenda.
While he did not address school choice Tuesday, he previously told the Texas Tribune, in part:"I believe the political winds have shifted, and the votes are there for ESAs. But I want to be very clear, I believe next session will be focused on education. I believe that school finance will be a huge priority for members of all parties.”
