After exceeding expectations in its opening weekend, Project Hail Mary looks poised to shatter projections for the second time in a row this weekend. The movie is guaranteed to retain its box-office crown after having passed the coveted $100 million milestone within a week of domestic release.
By Sunday, the movie will hit the $150 million mark if projections hold. Project Hail Mary is star Ryan Gosling's biggest blockbuster where he's at front and center. He earned an Oscar nod for his supporting role in Barbie a few years ago, and has headlined major franchise movies such as Blade Runner 2049. But he has always struggled to transition from arthouse fare to mainstream tentpoles. That ends now. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary is based on a bestselling book by Andy Weir, whose earlier novel served as the basis for The Martian. Project Hail Mary is pacing ahead of that film, which made $630 million worldwide in 2015. Starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian received a Best Picture nod at the Oscars and is currently sitting at a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Project Hail Mary, on the other hand, holds a"Certified Fresh" 95% critics' score and a"Verified Hot" 96% audience score on the aggregator website. This puts the movie's current domestic haul at more than $120 million; it will pass the $150 million mark by Sunday. As things stand, Project Hail Mary has already tripled the $44 million lifetime domestic gross of Gosling's 2018 film First Man. He played Neil Armstrong in that movie, directed by Damien Chazelle and inspired by Armstrong's mission to the moon aboard Apollo 11. Despite phenomenal reviews — it holds an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes — First Man underperformed at the box office, grossing around $105 million worldwide against a reported budget of $60 million.
