Ryan Gosling floating sideways in 'Project Hail Mary'
The phenomenal run that Project Hail Mary has been on won't slow down any time soon. The sci-fi epic exceeded expectations in its box-office debut, grossing $80 million domestically and $140 million worldwide.
Granted, the movie has a massive $200 million budget to recoup, but it's well on track to do so. In fact, as things stand, it might even surpass the $630 million worldwide haul of Ridley Scott's The Martian, which, like Project Hail Mary, was based on a bestseller by Andy Weir. However, before it can celebrate that achievement, Project Hail Mary has two new reasons to cheer. Ahead of its second weekend in theaters, the movie passed its first major milestone domestically by overtaking one of the greatest movies that the sci-fi genre has produced in the past decade. Project Hail Mary's running gross stands at more than $100 million domestically and more than $160 million worldwide. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie stars Ryan Gosling in the lead role. It opened to fantastic reviews and is now sitting at a"Certified Fresh" 95% critics' score and a"Verified Hot" 96% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site's consensus reads,"A visually dazzling space odyssey that's carried along effortlessly by the gravitational pull of Ryan Gosling at his most winning, Project Hail Mary is a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart." Serving as the first installment of Villeneuve's ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel, Dune opened to excellent reviews in 2021. However, the film's theatrical gross was impacted by Warner Bros.' controversial decision to release it day-and-date on the HBO Max streaming service.
