Sylvia Hoeks in 'Blade Runner 2049'
This might sound unbelievable, but Ryan Gosling has always struggled to deliver a big-budget blockbuster that rested on his shoulders. He did Barbie, but that movie's success could be attributed to many factors.
In recent years, Gosling has attempted to transition from character-based arthouse movies to large-scale tentpoles. Not all these attempts have been successful; Gosling starred in the Russo Brothers' $200 million Netflix espionage movie The Gray Man, which received poor reviews and sort of fizzled out despite the filmmakers' lofty early promises of a franchise. Some years before The Gray Man, Gosling starred in exactly the kind of big-budget studio film that one would associate with him. However, that movie underperformed at the box office despite excellent reviews. It has now been overtaken at the domestic box office by Gosling's first bona fide blockbuster in a lead role, Project Hail Mary. The new sci-fi sensation opened last week to exceptional reviews and exceeded expectations at the box office. The movie grossed $80 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office and is set to pass the coveted $100 million mark before entering its second weekend. On its first Tuesday, the movie earned more than what Interstellar, Gravity, and Dune: Part Two did on the corresponding day in their respective runs. By Thursday, Project Hail Mary will eclipse the total domestic gross of Denis Villeneuve's first Dune movie, whose theatrical run was impacted by a day-and-date release on HBO Max. Also featuring Harrison Ford alongside Gosling, the sequel remains notable for earning legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins his first Oscar after over a dozen nominations. Upon release, the movie was hailed as a worthy sequel to Ridley Scott's original Blade Runner, which famously underperformed during its theatrical run. Blade Runner 2049 didn't escape the curse, grossing $92 million domestically and $267 million worldwide against a reported budget of $185 million. The movie holds a"Certified Fresh" 88% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, slightly lower thanProject Hail Mary's current 95%. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary is based on the bestseller by Andy Weir, whose earlier novel inspired Scott's The Martian.
