NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — The New Braunfels Public Library is set to launch a new initiative called "Library Express," aimed at engaging a broader audience through a revamped mobile library service.
Library Director Cole Johnson explained the necessity of the program, stating, "We're going to have a whole list of programs that we bring to the communities areas that want it and request it and go where people are." Johnson noted that the previous mobile library, the RIOmobile, was effective when the library was smaller. However, with the addition of the Westside Library and Community Center and a new southeast branch, a more versatile approach is needed. "The RIOmobile was the perfect idea for us when we were just the main library, but since then, the Westside Library and Community Center has come on board, and with our new southeast branch, now we're thinking of using a smaller, more mobile vehicles, versatile, able to be driven by more staff members," Johnson said. The "Library Express" will function less as a traditional library on wheels and more as a promotional tool to educate the public about new programs and features. Johnson said, "For now, we can go to city parks that are on the other side of the freeway, show up, meet people, casually set up, show them how to get a library card right on their phone, and start using our resources right away." While there is no specific launch date, the city expects the program to be operational by the end of the year. Johnson added, "We're going to try to plug into as many events as we can partner with local organizations...I'll see you at the library."
