Jarrod Forthman, director of the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo, emphasized the importance of maintaining appropriate conditions for the zoo's diverse inhabitants. NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — As a winter freeze grips the region, the New Braunfels Snake Farm Zoo is taking extra precautions to ensure the safety and comfort of its exotic animals. Jarrod Forthman, director of the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo, emphasized the importance of maintaining appropriate conditions for the zoo's diverse inhabitants. "We have over 500 different species of animals here on display and being part of a zoo, we definitely have to be careful about...the extreme heat and extreme cold," Forthman said. The zoo houses a mix of indoor and outdoor animals, requiring a broad spectrum of care. Forthman explained that during extreme cold, all animals have access to warmer areas, such as indoor housing, where they can retreat from the elements. "In times of extreme cold like this, all the animals have warmer areas to go into, so that may be indoor housing, where they can go in and off display as they choose," he said. "Or examples would be these reptile enclosures behind me, each one of these species has certain temperature requirements, humidity requirements, et cetera." Forthman noted the necessity of being prepared for power outages, similar to those experienced by New Braunfels homeowners recently. "Being that that is a probability, whether it's happened this year or not every day, we have to be prepared for it," he said. "So we do have generators that are immediately ready to click on the second there's any power loss." While the cold can be challenging for some animals, Forthman mentioned that it can be a refreshing change for others. "When it rarely snows here and you have African lions just coming out like, 'Oh, this is awesome,' and actually rolling around in the snow and such is pretty cool," he said.
