Bacteria that cause common urinary-tract infections are increasingly developing resistance to existing antibiotics. Soon, a new treatment option could be available.

GSK PLC said its experimental treatment for uncomplicated urinary-tract infections was effective in two large clinical trials, paving the way for what could be the first new oral antibiotic for the common ailment in more than two decades.

Around half of all women have suffered a urinary-tract infection, or UTI, at least once, and recurrence is common, according to studies. UTIs are typically treated with antibiotics, but some bacteria have developed resistance to existing drugs, creating a need for new treatment options.
