After a tense week, NASA received a last-minute reprieve on Tuesday, February 18th, preventing over 1,000 employees on probationary status from immediate dismissal. This follows the Trump administration's withdrawal of a 'fork in the road' deferred resignation offer, which allowed the nation's 2 million federal workers the option to resign and retain pay and benefits through the end of September. Over 75,000 federal employees have accepted this offer, prompting the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to identify all employees on probationary periods. Probationary employees typically refer to new hires on trial periods lasting one to two years, as well as long-time workers transitioning into new positions.According to the OPM, citing the 'most current information' as of 6:00 p.m. ET (3:00 p.m. PST) on Tuesday, February 18th, the impending layoff plan exempted employees at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Texas. All meetings of the agency's Analysis/Assessment Groups (AGs), which provided expert analysis of science priorities to NASA and the public, have been indefinitely delayed.A letter signed by over 100 NASA employees and researchers, addressed to agency leadership, expressed deep concern over these recent developments. They argued that the actions of the past two weeks reverse advancements made by generations of workers, representing the full diversity of the United States, and contradict the scientific community's identified needs for progress. The letter urged decision-makers to unequivocally condemn and reverse these attacks on scientific integrity, federal grant funding for scientific research, and initiatives promoting public participation in science.
