As a significant cold front sweeps through northwest Florida, shelters are opening to provide refuge for those in need. Santa Rosa County has activated a cold weather shelter at Ferris Hill Baptist Church, while Waterfront Rescue Mission will operate as a daytime warming center.
Shelters will be open in northwest Florida as another round of cold air blasts into the region. A cold weather shelter will open in Santa Rosa County this week for those who are homeless or who have no heat, county officials announced.Ferris Hill Baptist Church, located at 6848 Chaffin St., will now be open Wednesday, February 19, through Sunday night, February 23. Those wishing to stay at the shelter must arrive between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. No one will be admitted after 8:30 p.m.
unless brought in by law enforcement. The shelter closes at 7 a.m. each morning.The cold weather shelter opens each night temperatures are expected to drop below 40 degrees and is available for those who can care for themselves and are not at risk to themselves or others.Waterfront Rescue Mission will remain open during the day as a warming center through Saturday, February 22. Open daily, with expanded capacity during cold weather events. 2200 N. Palafox St., Pensacola Intake is from 4:30-6:30 p.m. (must leave by 7 a.m., with ECAT providing free transportation to Waterfront starting at 7 a.m.) 7895 Pensacola Blvd., Pensacola Additionally, Escambia County Area Transit will provide free transportation between My Father’s Vineyard and Waterfront Rescue Mission, which allows those seeking shelter to easily travel between the overnight shelter at the church and the designated warming center at Waterfront Rescue. The National Weather Service is projecting lows across the region to be in the mid-20s to near 30 tonight and in the low 20s Thursday night, with readings in the 30s to near 40 Friday night through Sunday night
