Strong thunderstorms could pop up in any part of the Garden State Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening, with power outages possible
Forecasters from the Storm Prediction Center say there's a slight risk of severe thunderstorms hitting New Jersey with small hail and damaging winds on Sunday, June 23, 2024.because of the threat of strong thunderstorms that could produce small hail, heavy downpours and wind gusts of 60 mph or even stronger.
The thunderstorm watch is effective for Hunterdon, Mercer, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties from 4:30 p.m. Sunday through 10 p.m. Sunday.says some of the winds could be strong enough to knock down trees and power lines, and they can’t rule out the possibility of some isolated tornadoes forming during the thunderstorms.
A severe thunderstorm watch is not as urgent as a warning. It simply puts the public on alert that strong storms with winds capable of knocking down trees and power lines, or causing structural damage, could be on the way. Heavy downpours and damaging winds aren’t the only weather threats in New Jersey today. Many areas of the state are also underForecasters say the air temperature could rise as high as 98 degrees in some towns and cities Sunday afternoon, and the high humidity will make it feel like it’s in the triple digits. In the Newark area and other sections of the state, Sunday will be the seventh straight day of the lingering heat wave, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees or hotter.N.J.
