Forecasters say wind gusts could get as strong as 60 to 65 mph in some of the thunderstorms.
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for eight New Jersey counties for Thursday afternoon and evening.for eight New Jersey counties facing the potential for storms that could include wind gusts up to 65 mph, heavy rain and up to quarter-sized hail Thursday afternoon and Thursday night.
Forecasters say those areas of the state have the highest potential to get hit with severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, but isolated storms also could impact other areas of New Jersey in the late afternoon and evening as a cold front moves in from the northwest.
