Myanmar's military government announces a mass prisoner release ahead of Independence Day, marking 77 years since the country gained independence from British colonial rule.

The military junta in Myanmar announced the release of almost 6,000 prisoners as part of an annual amnesty to celebrate the country's 77th Independence Day . The amnesty includes over 5,800 prisoners, including 180 foreigners, who will be freed. Additionally, 144 individuals sentenced to life in prison will have their sentences commuted to 15 years. The junta did not disclose the specific offenses of the released prisoners or the nationalities of the foreign detainees.

The independence day ceremony in the capital, Naypyidaw, was attended by around 500 government and military personnel. Deputy army chief Soe Win, delivering a speech on behalf of junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, reiterated the junta's call for ethnic minority armed groups to lay down their arms and engage in peaceful political negotiations
