With further development, LUPIN has the potential to function like Google Maps for users in the Moon, including rovers and astronauts.

Navigating alien Moon terrain is a significant hurdle. The Moon currently lacks a real-time, precise navigation system akin to Earth’s GPS . This forces lunar rovers and astronauts to depend on internal calculations and delayed data from Earth to determine their location, which restricts operational efficiency.

The European Space Agency is working on the development of a “navigation system similar to GPS” called Enabling High-Performance PNT in the Lunar Environment .The multinational technology company GMV recently performed thorough field tests in Fuerteventura, Spain. This prototype navigation system mimics the signals future lunar rovers will use. With further development, LUPIN has the potential to function like Google Maps for lunar users, including rovers and astronauts.Automated lunar exploration in horizon The current navigation technologies used in missions like Chang’e and Chandrayaan include inertial navigation systems, optical cameras, altitude sensors , and digital maps.Although reliable, these navigational tech still lack the precision and fluidity of Earth-based systems like Google Maps for real-time updates. Furthermore, the limitations of lunar communication, requiring either direct Earth visibility or relay satellites, cause lags, thus hindering prompt decision-making.On Earth, Google Maps relies on a global GPS network that provides immediate, precise location and real-time information. The development of LUPIN comes under ESA’s Navigation Innovation and Support Program to evaluate novel positioning, navigation, and timing technologies. LUPIN will use existing planetary navigation methods along with distance signals from the future Lunar Communication Navigation System. This will involve satellites orbiting the Moon, similar to how GPS satellites orbit Earth. This technology will reduce the reliance on complex onboard systems, optimizing the performance and efficiency of lunar exploration vehicles.Apart from improving accuracy, it will enable faster and more efficient route planning. If all goes as planned, then this could lead to a new era in automated lunar exploration.Field test validates the system designed for MoonInterestingly, the recent field tests in Fuerteventura successfully “verified and validated” this real-time navigation system, simulating the precise location signals of the future LCNS.“We were able to successfully compile data over the course of 7 kilometers of travel, and at various speeds, from the conventional 0.2 meters per second, up to much faster speeds of 1.0 meters per second, which are the speeds of the future,” said Steven Kay, GMV’s manager for the LUPIN project. “In addition, we were able to simulate a whole range of lunar conditions and types of environments. This included tests performed at night, using a combination of simulated sunlight to emulate the illumination conditions found on the Moon, as well as tests performed in total darkness, using only the rover’s onboard lighting system to navigate,” Kay added. LUPIN envisions a future where lunar explorers have access to real-time positioning, enabling more agile, intelligent, and ultimately more successful missions. With NASA’s goal of returning astronauts to the Moon, advancements in lunar navigation technology are rapidly occurring. In March, NASA’s LuGRE experiment achieved a significant breakthrough by successfully using Earth’s Global Navigation Satellite System signals, like GPS, for navigation on the lunar surface for the first time. This demonstration proves that GNSS signals can be a viable navigation tool for future lunar explorers.
