Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed held his monthly media briefing Monday afternoon to discuss the latest city developments.

Reed covered a range of topics starting with public safety trends and emergency weather responses in Montgomery . “We’re never satisfied with where we are but we do want to highlight not only what law enforcement is doing right here in the city, county, in the state and our federal partners but also we want to highlight what are community members are doing, our community leaders,” said Reed when mentioning a 78% decrease in homicides since 2024.

He then discussed his time at the 2026 United States Conference of Mayors where he and other mayors across the nation urged Congress in Washington DC to vote against House Resolution 32, stating that it could negatively impact policing and public safety in Montgomery. “We took a stance on immigration in our cities across the country. We urge Congress to vote against house resolution 32 because it could divert critical resources from public safety, reduce trust needed for community policing and task local police with routine civil immigration enforcement that of course in found can create legal liability and distract from core safety missions,” said Reed. Reed also mentioned coming plans to develop the area around Montgomery’s convention center and even a hope to bring a professional soccer team to Alabama’s Capital City. He mentioned conversations as recent as Monday with the United Soccer League , on what a team in Montgomery could look like. He mentions the sport’s popularity and it being a World Cup year in the United State, as reasons on how it could bolster the local economy. Mayor Reed will deliver the annual State of the City address Feb. 10 on his plans for the year ahead.Sheriff says ‘we do in fact have a crime scene’ in search for ‘Today’ host Savannah Guthrie’s momRSA seeks nearly $300M increase to meet rising PEEHIP costs
