Two pastors in Montgomery, Alabama, are raising concerns about the impact of violent music on young people, citing the alarming number of arrests for violent crimes among teenagers.
Lead pastor Dewayne Rembert and associate pastor Deandre Burns of Montgomery ’s Flatline Church at Chisholm are concerned with the number of young people being arrested for violent crime. They saw two 18-year-old suspects arrested, and it continues a concerning trend. Of the 61 homicides in Montgomery in 2024, police have identified and arrested 37 suspects. At least 26 of them are 21 years old or younger.
Church leaders say there are many contributing factors, but they especially worry about the music young people listen to. “That was a killing in broad daylight,” Rembert said about Montgomery’s first homicide of the year. “And they got songs out here, kill them on sight, shoot them in broad daylight, shoot the reverend, so the music has got more evil than it was 20 years ago.”“They have deified rappers who murder for a living,” Rembert said. “But they smile in the mug shot, so it’s a badge of honor.” Associate pastor Deandre Burns says he believes violent music is promoted for profit, saying, “Prisons are making money, the music industry is making money, and the sad reality is it’s entertainment to some. The young kids they don’t know what’s true and what’s false.” While violent rap music is a concern, church leaders don’t think that hip hop is inherently bad. They’ve started their own hip hop group known as theThe church also has a, where they mentor students in urban communities and even teach a class focused on the history of hip hop.(WSFA)Montgomery saw an 18.6% decrease in homicides from 2023 to 2024
