Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, one of Montgomery's oldest African American churches, sustained damage from a fire late Tuesday evening.

A Montgomery church was damaged by fire late Tuesday evening, according to Montgomery Fire/Rescue. Units responded to a structure fire shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Dempsey Street, located near the Northern Boulevard where they found smoke and flames coming from a single story church. WSFA 12 News has confirmed the affected building is Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

A historic marker located outside the brick building notes that the church, founded in 1881, is “one of the oldest continuously existing African American churches in Montgomery.” The current building, according to the placard, was constructed in the 1950s.
