Mike McCarthy wants to keep the Steelers' 3-4 defensive scheme in tact.

says that he wants to stick with the team’s 3-4 defense that has been the staple of the team since 1992 when While McCarthy will not run the defensive side of the ball, he wants the new coordinator to keep that scheme the Steelers have played with for years, though there could be tweaks to coverages on the back end.

“The history of the Steelers defense and staying with the 3-4 is important, as far as the origin of it,” McCarthy said. “That’s something we have to build off of. I’ve been a head coach for 18 years. I’ve had one top 5 defense, and we won the Super Bowl that year. The importance of defense is critical.” McCarthy recalled the history of the scheme with the Steelers, from Dom Capers installing it and the mastering of it by Cowher and later on, Mike Tomlin. Tomlin came from a 4-3 background when he was hired, but opted to keep the defense and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. “I mean, this defense’s system has been here since 1992,” McCarthy said. “I came into the league with Coach Cowher and Dom Capers, so I’ve always been a fan of it. I always felt it was one of the toughest defenses to compete against as an offensive coach. That’s part of the reason why I went to it.” So, the Steelers’ defense will not be changing all that much. McCarthy added he wants to keep the language in the defense mostly the same if they can do that to aid the process of acclimating to a new defensive coordinator. The Steelers’ defense and likely their personnel will appear mostly the same next year, with McCarthy fully buying into that.New Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy gives update on Aaron Rodgers’ returnNick Farabaugh is the Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer for PennLive.com, based in Pittsburgh.
