Steelers team president Art Rooney II discussed why the team hired Mike McCarthy as their next head coach.
Steelers team president Art Rooney II discussed with Bob Labriola of Steelers .com why the team hired McCarthy, with the most important things being his winning record in the league and his track record of developing quarterbacks.
.“He’s been a winner everywhere he’s been. Probably just as important for our purposes, the quarterbacks that he’s worked with have all been very successful. So he has a proven track record of developing top flight quarterbacks. Those are the things that maybe stick out the most.” McCarthy won a Super Bowl with the Packers and Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. Rooney says the team has not closed the door to a return for Rodgers, who could be tempted to join his former coach wit the Steelers. Rooney noted the team could have dragged the process out further and talked to other candidates, but they decided not to after pinning down McCarthy was the right hire. “We wound up bringing in three guys for in-person interviews – Brian Flores, Mike McCarthy, and Anthony Weaver – and then we sat down and talked about whether we had our man, or if we wanted to bring in more people for in-person interviews,”“We decided that Mike was the man for the job, and so we went ahead and offered him the job on Saturday.” McCarthy, a Super Bowl-winning head coach with the Packers, last coached for the Dallas Cowboys last year. He was let go by Jerry Jones after his contract expired and had been interviewing for other jobs in this cycle. McCarthy, 62, is a Pittsburgh native and grew up in the Greenfield neighborhood. He graduated from Bishop Boyle High School in Homestead before going on to play college football. The first major coaching position of his career came at the University of Pittsburgh in 1990, and he stayed with the Panthers through the 1992 season before he was plucked by the Kansas City Chiefs for their staff.Nick Farabaugh is the Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer for PennLive.com, based in Pittsburgh.
