The Mets acquired Freddy Peralta from the Brewers in a blockbuster trade last week, adding an ace to their starting rotation.
Published: Jan. 27, 2026, 4:03 p.m.“I just got here,” Peralta said during his introductory Zoom call with reporters on Tuesday. “I think that I gotta share time with my teammates, think about different ideas, learn about everybody — coaches, the organization in general — and then we can see.
" Peralta was acquired by New York in last week’s blockbuster trade with the Brewers. The Mets shipped two top-ranked prospects — Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat — to Milwaukee in the deal, acquiring Peralta and big-league right-hander Tobias Myers. Since Peralta is entering the final year of his contract, the Mets need to be comfortable with the scenario where the right-hander departs in free agency next winter after one season in Queens. That was part of the calculus for the Mets’ front office in deciding which prospects they were willing to part with in negotiations with the Brewers, There’s also a path this year for the Mets to keep Peralta around by offering him a substantial multi-year deal. They have a chance to convince the star right-hander to commit to being a Met for the long-term before he tests the open market. One day after the Peralta trade, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns was asked if he’s hopeful the ace starter will stick around beyond next season. “I’m not going to speculate on that on Day 1 here,” Stearns said. “We’ll let Freddy get acclimated to the organization and any conversations that we may have or have in the future, I think we’re gonna do our best to keep private and not talk about publicly.” Peralta’s presence atop the Mets’ rotation makes New York more of a championship contender in 2026. Stearns and the Mets have been busy revamping this roster as the organization moves on from the likes of Pete Alonso, Edwin Díaz, Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil. The Mets have also acquired infielders Bo Bichette, Jorge Polanco and Marcus Semien, outfielder Luis Robert Jr. and relievers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver this winter. Regardless of what happens after next season, Peralta is pumped to pitch in a Mets uniform and help his new team win. “I’m really happy to be here in New York and represent the New York Mets organization,” Peralta said. “It’s a different market, a different city. There’s a lot more fans, a lot more people watching. I like the competition we’re going to face here.”Max Goodman is the New York Mets beat reporter for NJ Advance Media at NJ.com.
