A Clear Springs player comes up with a loose ball during the final hectic moments of their Friday contest with the Lady Mavs. Springs will play in Gold on Saturday, the Mavs in Silver because of the 53-48 outcome.Despite two cliffhangers, Pasadena Memorial's varsity boys basketball team is making plans for a rare trip to a McDonald's Texas Invitational championship game on Saturday.
The twin wins propelled the Mavs, now 4-0 for the 19th edition of the tournament, to the Division II Gold bracket title contest, scheduled for 3 p.m. on their home floor against Klein Oak. Klein Oak had the exact experience as Memorial in winning their semifinal contest, nipping Lake Creek 35-34. Even several minutes into the third period, Tomball's lead was still in double figures at 36-25. But then Brown and Guillermo Vasquez got hot from outside. Each hit two 3-point goals from behind the arc, mostly from the left side and the Mavs had trimmed the deficit to 42-39 entering the fourth period.
The Eagles outscored the Tigers 28-6 the rest of the way. Kevin Juarez, just about the last remaining holdover to Pasadena's exciting district championship club from two seasons ago, snapped the tie by scoring the next four points. Elijah McNeil tacked on three buckets and after three, Pasadena's lead had grown to 11 points at 50-39.Dobie, which elected to go Division I this year, will play for the Silver bracket third-place game on Saturday.
