With the season on the line and the running game bottled up, Lincoln High quarterback KJ Chatham came up with two long scoring passes, propelling the Hornets to a come-from-behind 28-24 win over Carlsbad in the CIF Open Division championship at Snapdragon Stadium.

“I just kept moving,” Thompson-Miller said. “I broke a tackle and then had to use my speed to get to the end zone.”With the win, marking No. 2-seeded Lincoln’s first Open Division title and first championship since 2018, the Hornets advance to the Southern California Regionals.It took a huge Lincoln comeback this time. Trailing 21-6 early in the fourth quarter, Chatham hit Josiah Cox with a 25-yard scoring pass.

That’s when Chatham struck again, this time hitting Mahki Gray in full stride for an 80-yard scoring strike. Chatham and Raylon Logan hooked up for a two-point PAT, making it 24-21 Carlsbad with 6:02 remaining. This time Chatham threw three incompletions, and the Hornets faced a fourth-and-10 at their 35 before the 65-yard winner to Thompson-Miller.
