Can bubble tea stay true to its roots in a $4 billion market?
There’s no denying that Shark Tank is a cultural phenomenon. It’s the reality show where entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to famous investors of all industries with hopes of securing funding in exchange for a percentage stake. Thanks to recent viral social media clips, the Asian American diaspora has become familiar with the Canadian version called Dragons’ Den, in which Simu Liu, a Chinese Canadian actor of Marvel fame, is a “dragon,” or investor. The dustup occurred on the Oct.
But there’s a reason why third culture Taiwanese and Asian Americans have a special attachment to bubble tea. The beverage was sold in cafés that were safe spaces for marginalized communities, much as Chinese restaurants were in the US long ago. In that sense, Chinese food “was despised because it was the food of a despised race,” Yong says. “But it changed as it became popular because provided a social space” for other marginalized communities.
