A previous winter system expanded across the eastern half of the United States, placing Texas under various weather alerts.
Texas is bracing for more winter weather as large swaths of the state are facing an extreme cold warning, cold weather advisory or a freeze warning. Why It Matters The warnings across Texas raise the risk of roadway hazards and life-threatening cold exposure, prompting public safety advisories as temperatures and wind chills remain well below freezing across large parts of the Lone Star State.
What To Know Officials advise residents to protect people, pets and pipes, noting temperatures would remain below freezing through Tuesday morning before climbing above freezing Tuesday afternoon. Portions of the state facing a cold weather advisory include the cities of Odessa, Midland, Abilene, Lubbock, Fort Davis and many others. The advisory goes into place Monday evening and remains until Tuesday morning. An extreme cold warning is also in effect until late Tuesday morning for cities including Austin, San Antonio, Eagle Pass, Del Rio, Waco, Dallas, Fort Worth, Tyler and several more. The National Weather Service warns that “Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 5 below zero“ are possible in northern Texas. A freeze warning will impact southern portions of the state starting Monday night and into Tuesday morning. Cities including McAllen, Corpus Christi and South Padre Island are impacted. Below is a map from the NWS showing the areas of Texas under an advisory or warning: Nearly the entire state of Texas is under a cold weather advisory or warning, as “dangerously cold wind chills“ are possible. Earlier in the weekend, a massive winter system expanded across the eastern half of the United States, placing Texas under various weather alerts and prompting Republican Governor Greg Abbott to issue a disaster declaration to assist with resource deployment. What People Are Saying NWS Meteorologist Marc Chenard, to Newsweek via phone on Monday: “The extreme cold warning is the most severe type of warning, but it does not mean necessarily the coldest temperatures in the state are under the warning. It is, however, correlated to level of impact. “When you start to get temperatures that cold, you could experience hypothermia or frostbite, if the skin is exposed. If you're outside, dress appropriately.“ Abbott, on X Monday while commenting on the previous winter weather in his state: “The Texas power grid made it through this bitter winter storm with plenty of surplus power. The homes that don’t have power are the result of local power line problems caused by falling trees and even car wrecks destroying power poles. Local providers are making repairs fast.“ TxDOT, on X Monday: “Stay off the roads if you can overnight. Our crews have been taking advantage of the sun Monday, clearing and treating roads throughout the state, but roads may refreeze. If you need to drive, take it slow, give our crews space and check http://drivetexas.org for conditions.“ What Happens Next Nationally, forecasters signaled the potential for another winter storm in the eastern U.S. later in the week, although details of its track and timing remain uncertain.
