Guardians takeaways
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- From the outside looking in MLB’s trade deadline may be one of the most exciting times of the season. What Guardians minor leaguer can’t be traded? Hey, Hoynsie! “I think the trade deadline stinks,” said manager Stephen Vogt.
“It does. You’re either losing people you love or you’re gaining somebody that you don’t know. And it can be scary for people. . .it’s very real. “In theory it sounds good where it’s like, ‘Oh, let’s go get this, let’s go get that.’ But there are a couple people that have to go away when that happens.” The trade July 30 deadline is 10 days away. The Guardians own the best record in the American League at 59-37, but they need help, especially in the starting rotation. If they can’t add a starter, perhaps they’ll seek help for the offense or the bullpen. Vogt said the best approach in talking to his players as the deadline approaches is be direct and honest. “I think it’s having that open dialogue of it’s okay to not be okay with this,” said Vogt. " It’s okay if this doesn’t feel good for a few days. And we’ve had some moves like that on our team this year that were unpopular. It hurts. It hurts us.” Vogt said he has confidence in Chris Antonetti, Mike Chernoff, Matt Forman and the rest of the front office that they will take the team chemistry that has been created on the Guardians into account with any deal that is made.Vogt said he doesn’t know what is going to happen as the as the 6 p.m. June 30 deadline nears. Boyd, who signed a one-year big-league deal with Cleveland on June 29, made a three-inning rehab start Tuesday for the Guardians’ complex team in Goodyear, Arizona.Lefty Sam Hentges is expected to start playing catch in the next day or two. Hentges was placed on 15-day injured reserve with a sore left shoulder on July 12.Hentges opened the year on the IL with a injured middle finger on his pitching hand. In 25 appearances he’s pitched 23 2/3 innings with 27 strikeouts, five walks and 18 hits.No one may have been smiling more in the Guardians’ dugout during their six-run eighth inning Friday than Vogt. On their last trip before the break, the Guardians went 2-5 against the Tigers and Rays. They were shutout three times and managed to score just 16 runs. Nine of those runs came in one game. “That was probably my favorite inning of baseball that we’ve played in the last two or three weeks,” said Vogt. “It just looked like us when we’re putting pressure on teams, using the bunt, running right in people’s faces, making them make plays.”Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor entered Saturday night’s game ranked second and third in the AL in RBI with 79 and 70, respectively. Aaron Judge of the Yankees is No. 1 with 86. Regarding home runs, Ramirez iwas tied with Boston’s Rafael Devers for fourth place with 23. Naylor was seventh with 22. Judge leads the way with 36.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
