Omid Bayati, 43, of Hillsdale, pleaded guilty to attempting to bribe a Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioner to increase his salary and status within the agency. Bayati offered the commissioner money and favors in exchange for preferential treatment.

The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission is a state-run public utility agency tasked with managing pollution in the Passaic River and its tributaries. The agency serves 48 municipalities in Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson and Union counties, On one occasion Bayati tried to pay the commissioner with a check left at a Fair Lawn restaurant and drawn from an account labeled “PVSC PAC” which was unaffiliated with the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, according to court documents.The commissioner reported the incident to his own supervisors and law enforcement, authorities said.
Bayati also said that he was looking for help securing promotions at the PVSC as well as in politics, officials said.
