A major winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall to much of Pennsylvania, with accumulations expected to be the highest for areas south of the turnpike. Snowfall is expected to begin in the Pittsburgh area Sunday evening and continue through Monday. Philadelphia and surrounding areas will see snowfall starting Monday morning and lasting through the evening.

It appears to be the biggest snowfall for most areas around Pennsylvania so far this winter. Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings are in effect from the Ohio border into New Jersey, in a line that pretty much follows the turnpike. Little is expected north of that line, with predicted accumulations increasing the farther south you go. Snow is forecast to begin in the Pittsburgh area around 7 p.m., with 3 to 5 inches falling over the next 24 hours.

That area is under a winter storm warning. In Philadelphia, its suburbs and parts of southern New Jersey, the snow is forecast to start around 1 a.m. Monday and continue off and on until the storm moves out around 10 p.m. That area is under a winter weather advisory, forecasting 2 to 4 inches across Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry and Lebanon counties. The advisory goes into effect at midnight Sunday and lasts for 24 hours. What is certain is that anything that falls will hang around through next weekend. Highs will struggle to top the freezing mark over the next seven days, and there’s a slight chance at this point of snow on Saturday
