Tri-Union Seafoods issues a voluntary recall on canned tuna sold under various brands due to a manufacturing defect in the can lids that could lead to contamination. Consumers urged to return the products and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
A voluntary recall has been issued for canned tuna sold at major retailers across the United States, including Trader Joe's , Walmart , and others. Tri-Union Seafoods , a subsidiary of Thai Union Group, announced the recall on February 7th due to a potential manufacturing defect in the 'easy open' pull tab can lids of select lots of canned tuna products.
The defect could compromise the integrity of the product seal, leading to leaks or, in the worst-case scenario, contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism. Tri-Union Seafoods emphasized in its recall notice that consumers should not use the recalled products, even if they do not appear or smell spoiled. Anyone experiencing symptoms of illness should seek immediate medical attention. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products. The impacted tuna products were distributed under various brand names, including Genova, Van Camp's, H-E-B, and Trader Joe's, and were sold in 25 states as well as Washington, D.C. Customers in possession of any recalled tuna cans are advised to return them to the retailer for a full refund, discard them, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product. The company offers additional support via email at [email protected] and phone at (833) 374-0171, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. Tri-Union Seafoods assures that this recall does not affect other products as no other packaging was impacted by the potential defect. The company remains dedicated to upholding the highest safety and quality standards.
