Who was Mehki Brooks? Some may remember his name from headlines after a shooting in December, but to his family, he was so much more. "He was a motivated young man. He was very determined. He knew what he wanted, and he was going to get it done," said Brooks. But on Dec. 30, Mehki’s life was cut short. He was shot while driving near South 25th Street and Duke Street, and just a few minutes away, near Old Holy Church, is where police said Brooks crashed his car."And I just, I just screamed and hollered, screamed and hollered, like how did this happen to my son," said Brooks. He was taken to Holy Spirit Hospital, about a 20-minute drive from the scene, where Brooks said he later died."There's no warning. It's like the last time I saw him walk out the door, I never thought that that'd be the last time I would see him", she said. Brooks said Mehki was a family man with a good job and a passion for cooking. She also said he felt a strong connection to his identity, proudly saying he was an American Indian and took pride in where he came from. "He really wanted something out of life. He always told me, 'It's not what they call you, it's who you answer to,'" said Brooks. Mehki was also working to start his own business, “My Life’s Journey,” focused on giving people second chances.But it wasn’t only the community he wanted to help. At home, he was taking care of his mom, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2020. "I was so messed up physically, and he poured into me things that I told him when he was a child. I just say, when you pour into your children, they will pour into you," she said. Now, Kizzy said she’s holding onto memories, the laughs, the lessons, and the moments that showed exactly who Mehki was. "I'm just so proud of him. I'm proud to have been his mom for 20 years, 11 months, two weeks. I wish it could have been his whole life," she said. The family tells CBS 21 they plan to file a lawsuit claiming it took too long to be notified about Mehki’s death.
