LORAIN, Ohio - Lorain High School students shared their approval for the return of a diver’s education class for the first time in 3 decades. “A lot of our parents are busy with work,” Savannah Bryant said.
“To be able to get to our extracurriculars like sports and band, we need to be able to drive ourselves.” The program is the result of 5 years of effort from school superintendents and Director of Secondary Initiatives Mic Beserra. “Sometimes transportation is a barrier,” he said. “If this is just one way that Lorain City Schools can remove an obstacle, then let’s do it.” Transport is a barrier that students are familiar with. “Having to beg people to give me rides all the time is a bit annoying, so it would be better to learn how to drive myself,” said Logan Wright. The school district was also sable to secure a 2024 Honda Civic, allowing prospective drivers to practice during school hours for school credit. “It’s a 24-hour course online, and then they’ll do their driving in the same day during the school day,” Beserra said. School superintendents were able to secure funding for the course for the next 2 years, but they’re looking to secure further funding and resources for the next 5 years and beyond. “After this year we’ll definitely need a second car and more teachers trained,” Beserra said, “so we’ll be looking for community partners.”“Being able to have a car to get that experience,” Cadee Lee, another senior, said, “just makes us safer drivers in general.” The driving school will begin at the start of the new academic school year this fall.
