Lorain County is hosting a one-day lead-safe training to help contractors qualify for county-funded housing rehabilitation projects.

ELYRIA, Ohio -- After a strong response to its first offering, Lorain County is bringing back a one-day training session aimed at local contractors who want to work on publicly funded housing projects and get paid for it.

County officials announced they will again host a Renovation, Repair and Painting training course next month, giving contractors the chance to earn EPA lead-safe certification, required for many housing rehabilitation jobs. The session is scheduled for Feb. 6 and will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lorain County Community College’s Ben and Jane Norton Culinary Arts Center. The training focuses on how to safely manage renovation projects involving lead-based paint. That is a common issue in older homes, not to mention a requirement for contractors who want to bid on projects funded through the county’s Community Housing Impact and Preservation Program and similar public initiatives. Officials say demand for the training has been high, especially as the county prepares for upcoming housing rehabilitation work that will require certified contractors. According to the county, the training covers proper lead-safe work practices, how to meet CHIP and other program eligibility requirements, and ways contractors can strengthen their qualifications when bidding on publicly funded projects. “Lead-safe practices aren’t just about compliance,” Lorain County Commissioner Marty Gallagher said in a news release. “They’re about protecting families and improving the quality of housing across Lorain County. We want our local contractors to have every opportunity to participate in these projects and grow their businesses.”Hannah Drown Hannah Drown has been with cleveland.com since 2014 and currently works in education reporting covering a variety of education topics impacting the region.
