Investigators say they haven’t identified any ideology behind Thomas Matthew Crooks’s attack at a rally for Donald Trump, but they believe he acted alone.
The FBI is investigating the shooting at the Trump rally “as an assassination attempt and potential domestic terrorism,” the agency said in a statement Sunday. While the FBI’s criminal division will investigate the shooter’s motivations and alleged plot to kill former president Donald Trump as part of its assassination attempt probe, the counterterrorism division has a different bar to meet. An incident can be defined as domestic terrorism involving acts dangerous to human life that violate U.S.
criminal laws – while also appearing to be intended to: intimidate or coerce a civilian population; or influence government policy by intimidation of coercion; or affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping. Additionally, domestic terrorism is defined as occurring primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
